The Luce Center’s goal was to develop unique interfaces for various devices to display hundreds of pieces previously hidden from visitors in the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s hidden storage facility. A primary requirement was for users to view this now ‘visible storage’ online at bma.com, at one of the in-house kiosks, or on a handheld device given to museum visitors interested in a ‘guided tour’. We worked closely with the internal team to develop all 3 interfaces using the same exact code base. A quick explanation of this solution goes like this: by changing a single file for each display type, we were able to cut the development time by 2/3, support a single point of entry for all development efforts (rather than 3 unique databases, servers, etc), and allow for future interface scalability and ‘plug-and-play’ changes to any of these unique user experiences as the museum’s storage and user needs evolve. Our understanding of the benefits and limitations of these interfaces and devices is our key value, and allowed us to present unique, usable and affordable solutions with a clarity of purpose.
